Why did I become a photographer?

Updated: Jan 25, 2019

For my first ever blog post, I thought you'd want to know the beginning. The WHY of what I do. I attended the Art Institute of Charlotte for digital filmmaking and video production where I can only recall two or three back female students, including myself. Most of my classes consisted of males. That didn't bother me, and some became good friends. See, I wanted to be a filmmaker and a writer. Not a photographer. I had to take photography classes, however, I was into motion and video. After leaving the Art Institute, I went to work full time, but in my free time I continued to shoot video for my YouTube Channel. Years later, like the most of us, I became a fan of Instagram and followed the natural hair community. Within this community I also found professional photography of natural hair beauties. I began checking out different hashtags and came across other photographers and felt intrigued. I was inspired by the story their images told. I like to think photography and videography have always been in me. I would capture pictures of different people downtown, different objects, and share them on social media. From there, co-workers or family members would want their pictures taken. I wasn't sure if I should, but I DID. The rest is history.

As I started to take my photography more seriously, I wanted to meet more photographers like me. There are so many photographers worldwide, but I never knew how many of them looked like me. I never realized how many black female photographers were right here in my city. I linked up with other photographers with the help of Instagram and simply connecting. From The Queen Photographers I gained so many friends and opportunities that helped get me where I am today. I began capturing families, birthday portraits, children, events, etc. After a while I wanted to really narrow down my niche. What do I love to shoot the most? What brings me joy and comes easily? Families and Weddings. That's it! I absolutely love to capture candid family moments, love, smiles, and pure joy. With engagements and weddings, I can tell a story of the most important day of the couple's lives. I also capture other types of portraits such as branding for entrepreneurs and business owners. If you fit into any of these categories, please reach out. I'd love to capture what brings you joy!

So the moral of the story is, do what makes YOU happy. Don't wait for the perfect time, just start.
